PROT-1 when running root.sh on HP-UX 11.31 Clusterware install

Well that was a lengthy title. Anyhoo, I was setting up a RAC installation (10gR2) on HP-UX 11.31, and encountered an error that took way too long to resolve considering the solution.

So, installing Clusterware, everything proceeded beautifully until running root.sh. It would run for a few seconds, and then this error would occur.

Setting the permissions on OCR backup directory
Setting up NS directories
PROT-1: Failed to initialize ocrconfig
Failed to upgrade Oracle Cluster Registry configuration

No errors were reported in the crs logs or system logs. We initially thought it was the disk config, and we tried hours (days) going down this path. With no word from our SR on metalink, the sysadmin helped us out. Long story short, it turned out it was because of the host name. 10g on HP-UX 11.31 requiresthat the hostname not be longer than 8 characters. That was all it was!!! After changing the hostname to a shorter name the installation proceeded swimmingly.

It wasn't in the Oracle 10g install guide, however it was in the 11gR1 install notes and the Health Check Support Catalog on metalink (Doc ID 868955.1). I wish this was documented more visibly, like in the actual 10g installation docs.
